Prosperity Isn’t about Asking God for Things

Manifestation Goody BagAt our Center we just started the ten-week Prosperity Plus II course with Mary Manning Morrissey. Mary relentlessly talks about the spiritual principle behind manifestation. Her core message is about so much more than just getting things from what some call the “Manifestation Goody Bag” – the parking spots, cars, computers – the things many people get by using the Law of Attraction or “The Secret.”

Being in the class strengthens prosperity consciousness – knowing it is God’s unlimited life that we live in every moment.  We are naturally prosperous all the time.

I live in Acton and every workday I have a 90-mile roundtrip commute. When I moved up there I was worried, because I’m prone to speeding and that 25-mile stretch on the 14 freeway is free sailing. I do love the drive – I pray for folks on my prayer list. I affirm that my drive is safe, easy and without speeding tickets. I’ve been doing this drive for five years now.

A couple of Sundays ago while I was driving down for service at the Center, I was not mindful and I got a speeding ticket. What a wonderful opportunity to observe my habitual patterns float to the surface. I was angry because I had affirmed not getting a speeding ticket!  “What’s up with that?!

Here’s what’s up with that – it’s not about getting things (the Manifestation Goody Bag), but it is all about waking up to our Oneness with the infinite nature of God.

Yes, our Science of Mind teaching does include talk about manifestation and demonstration:

Creative Process sequence starts with pure Intelligence; movement of intelligence, which is intelligence becoming aware of something. The Law of Mind set in motion by consciousness, followed by the objective manifestation, or the demonstration.

–Ernest Holmes

Some people make the mistake of taking that description of how life works and turning it into getting more things in their life.

I got angry about the ticket because I expected to manifest a goody in the form of “I don’t deserve a ticket.” The truth is that I was clocked at 86 miles an hour, driving unconsciously! I had affirmed safety and God showed up as the CHP to bring me to mindfulness and safety.

Prosperity is not about manifesting goodies. When we really have the direct experience of knowing that we live God’s infinite life, then the Universe rushes in to give us exactly what we need. When I pray for things instead of affirming to know the truth, I limit myself.

God is unlimited, I am unlimited. God is, I am.

I invite all us to stop limiting ourselves to the Manifestation Goody Bag and go for living the truth. Let love wash through all of our habitual patterns to wake us up to our eternal prosperity.

What if You Could Have Unlimited Power and Phenomenal Success?

Seagull 1 Rev ElizabethWith the Prosperity Plus class about to unfold at our Center, I was reminded of a film in which the protagonist develops unlimited power. In “Limitless,” Bradley Cooper plays a struggling writer living a hand-to-mouth existence, living in a cluttered dump, and lacking the motivation and persistence to put words on paper. He’s also losing his girlfriend, played by Abby Cornish.

He meets an acquaintance from his past who gives him a small, transparent pill, NZT, which when taken, totally transforms him. An unprecedented surge of motivation and supercharged abilities remove all blocks to his productivity and learning.

He completes his book, learns the piano in three days, and becomes fluent in several foreign languages with minimal exposure. He suddenly knows everything about everything…he is using not the usual 20% of his brain power, but 100%.

All fear and social shyness are gone; he accesses everything he has ever read, heard or seen. In one amusing scene, he fights off five thugs using martial arts skills he accesses by visualizing old Bruce Lee videos stored in his brain. As his adventure continues, he makes huge amounts of money in the stock market, and links up with a character, played by Robert DeNiro, to complete a multi-billion dollar merger.

In the film, it’s a little pill that has an amazing power of transformation. At our Center, the teachings of Ernest Holmes and Science of Mind show us another pathway. Ernest Holmes says that life externalizes at the level of our thought. In other words, what we think manifests in our lives.

“There is an inner urge in our own minds to grow, to expand, to break down the barriers of previous limitations and to ever widen our experience. This persistent urge is a driving influence, an irresistible force, and constitutes the greatest impulse in human experience. …It is the urge back of all accomplishment, the promise of all fulfillment.”

–Ernest Holmes

In our Science of Mind teachings, we come to know that there is one Power — a Power for Good in the Universe, and we can use it… through our mind, our thoughts, our feelings, and our actions. We know we are expressions of Creative Intelligence, of Infinite Power, AND that Intelligence, that Power, is unlimited. We do have unlimited brain power and the capability to generate phenomenal success!

In the film Bradley Cooper uses a pill to become “limitless.” That may seem an easier path than learning the principles of Science of Mind, but interestingly, by film’s end, he says he has learned to taper off the pill, to use it to expand his brainpower, and achieve unlimited success through his own efforts. Either way, Limitless power at man’s disposal is a classic idea and inspiration to living our best lives.
